With arms outstretched, the statue symbolizes peace and welcomes all who visit. The statue has become an emblem of both Rio de Janeiro and the entire nation of Brazil. The idea for a Christian monument on Corcovado Mountain first arose in the 1850s, but it wasn't until after World War I that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro proposed the construction of the statue. This was motivated by a perceived decline in religious faith within the country. Citizens petitioned President Epitácio Pessoa, and permission was granted to build the statue on the mountain's summit. The foundation stone was ceremonially laid on April 4, 1922, marking the centennial of Brazil's independence. The statue was constructed between 1922 and 1931, made of reinforced concrete and soapstone. Designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by French sculptor Paul Landowski , it stands 30 meters (98 feet) tall, with an 8-meter (26-foot) pedestal. The arms stretch 28 meters (92 feet) wide. In October 2006, on the 75th anniversary of its construction, a chapel was consecrated beneath the statue.Visitors can reach Christ the Redeemer by train, van, or hiking.
