Discover more about Copacabana Fort

Copacabana Fort, inaugurated in 1914, was built to defend Guanabara Bay and Copacabana Beach. Situated at the beach's southern tip, it provides panoramic views of Copacabana and Leme beaches, as well as Praia do Diabo and Arpoador rock. The fort was once considered the most modern war square in Latin America. In 1987, the fort's function as a coastal defense was discontinued, and it was repurposed into the Army Historical Museum. The museum showcases exhibits related to the Brazilian Army's history and traditions, with a collection of over 15,000 pieces. Although most information is in Portuguese, translation apps can help. Visitors can explore the fort's original features, including 12-meter-thick external walls and Krupp cannons. The site also offers leisure and cultural activities, with cafes like Confeitaria Colombo and Café 18 do Forte providing dining options with scenic views. The fort's architecture blends military functionality with aesthetic beauty, making it a unique destination. One of the fort's most significant historical events was the 1922 revolt, where rebellious officers seized the fort to challenge the government. Today, Copacabana Fort is a popular tourist attraction, offering a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
