Discover more about Passeio Público

Passeio Público, located in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, holds the distinction of being Brazil's first public park, inaugurated in 1783. Created by the renowned Brazilian sculptor and urban planner Mestre Valentim, the park arose from a filled-in lagoon that previously contributed to unsanitary conditions in the city. Envisioned as a space for leisure and well-being, the park's design blended French and English landscaping styles. Throughout its history, Passeio Público has served as a social and cultural hub, attracting intellectuals, artists, and politicians. In the mid-19th century, Auguste François Marie Glaziou, a French landscape architect, redesigned the park in the romantic style, softening its original symmetry with winding paths and naturalistic arrangements. Although little of Mestre Valentim's original design remains, highlights include the rococo-style iron gate and the Fountain of the Child. Today, visitors can enjoy the park's tranquil atmosphere, explore its historical features, and appreciate its role as a green oasis in the city center.
