Discover more about Forte de Copacabana

Forte de Copacabana, inaugurated in 1914, was built to protect Guanabara Bay and Copacabana Beach. The fort played a key role in defending Guanabara Bay. It was once the most modern war square in Latin America. The fort's walls are up to 12 meters thick. It features armored cupolas housing Krupp cannons. In 1922, the fort was central to the Tenente Revolt, when rebellious officers turned its guns on Rio de Janeiro. The government suppressed the revolt, and Brazil decommissioned its coastal defense artillery in 1987. Today, the fort is a military base open to the public, housing the Army Historical Museum. The museum features exhibits about the Brazilian Army. Visitors can explore the fort's original features, wander the underground rooms, and see how soldiers lived. The location also offers cafes with views of Copacabana and Leme beaches.
