Discover more about Parque Lage

Parque Lage, a verdant oasis in Rio de Janeiro, offers visitors a unique experience that combines natural beauty with architectural grandeur. Situated at the foot of Corcovado Mountain, where the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue stands, the park's history dates back to the colonial era when it served as a sugar mill. In the 19th century, the property transitioned into a residence for nobles and aristocrats. Industrialist Henrique Lage acquired the land in the 1920s and commissioned Italian architect Mario Vodret to design a Roman-style mansion as a gift for his wife, Gabriella Besanzoni, an Italian opera singer. The mansion became a hub for Rio's high society, hosting lavish parties and cultural events. Today, Parque Lage is a public park and historical landmark, offering free admission to all. The mansion houses the School of Visual Arts (Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage), which hosts contemporary art exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events. Visitors can also enjoy a meal or snack at the café located within the mansion, offering picturesque views of the park and Christ the Redeemer. The park's 52 hectares encompass diverse landscapes, including geometrically designed French-style gardens, romantic English-style gardens, lakes, artificial islands, caves, and even an aquarium. For those seeking adventure, a well-marked trail leads from Parque Lage to the summit of Corcovado, providing a challenging but rewarding hike through the Tijuca National Park. Parque Lage was listed as a historical and cultural heritage site by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) in 1957.
