Praça Terreiro de Jesus: Salvador's Historic Heart

Praça Terreiro de Jesus, officially named Praça 15 de Novembro, is a historically and culturally significant square located in the heart of Salvador's Pelourinho district. This open-air plaza serves as a meeting point where the city's rich history, stunning architecture, and diverse cultural expressions converge. The square is framed by impressive colonial-era buildings, including the Catedral Basílica de Salvador, Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Domingos Gusmão, and Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos. The former Brazilian School of Medicine, now the Afro-Brazilian Museum, also borders the square, offering insights into Brazil's African heritage through art, clothing, and artifacts. The ground is covered in a striking black and white Portuguese-style mosaic that creates a wave-like geometric pattern. A large cast-iron fountain, topped with a statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility, stands as a centerpiece.
