The Rio Branco Palace, a grand dame in Salvador, stands as a proud emblem of Brazilian history. Its story began in 1549, coinciding with the foundation of Brazil's first capital. Initially, it served as the headquarters of the Portuguese government, a command center, and the official residence for significant figures. Royalty, including Emperor D. Pedro I and Empress Leopoldina, graced its halls.However, history dealt a harsh blow in 1912 when the palace was bombed, leaving it in ruins. Yet, it was reborn in 1919, renamed in honor of the Baron of Rio Branco. Over the years, it has been a barracks, a prison, and a cultural hub. Today, it houses Bahia's Department of Culture and the Pedro Calmon Foundation.Visitors can explore the ground floor, which offers unparalleled views of Salvador, including the Lacerda Lift, the Bay of All Saints, and the Lower City. The Memorial of the Governors showcases Brazil's past through artifacts like insignias, swords, and personal items of former leaders.
