Casa do Grito, located in Vila Monumento, São Paulo, is a significant historical building tied to Brazil's independence. The house gets its name from its association with the Cry of Ipiranga, Dom Pedro I's symbolic declaration of Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1822. While the oldest document relating to the house dates back to 1844, its image is closely linked to the house in Pedro Américo's painting 'Independence or Death'.
Constructed using the 'pau-a-pique' technique (wattle and daub), the house offers a glimpse into the architecture of the time. Over the years, it served as a resting point for 'tropeiros' (travelers) on the Caminho do Mar road to Santos, functioning as a small inn and carriage house. After being abandoned for a period, the house was restored in 1955, with efforts made to resemble the building in Américo's painting, including the addition of a false window.
