Discover more about Parque Estadual Jaraguá

Parque Estadual Jaraguá, a preserved green area, is located in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Created in 1961 around Pico do Jaraguá (Jaraguá Peak), the highest point in the city at 1,135 meters, the park offers a respite from the urban environment. The name Jaraguá comes from the Tupi language and means “Lord of the Valleys”. The park spans 492 hectares and is one of the last remnants of the Atlantic Forest in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region. In 1994, UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site, as part of the Green Belt Biosphere Reserve of São Paulo. The area's history dates back to the Brazilian Gold Cycle when Afonso Sardinha explored the Serra da Cantareira. Mining activities took place in the 16th century, and the government acquired the land in 1940. Visitors can explore various well-maintained trails catering to different skill levels. These trails provide opportunities to observe native flora and fauna, including the red-browed amazon parrot, monkeys, and sloths. Spaces for relaxation and picnicking are available, making it suitable for families and friends. The park also features the historic Afonso Sardinha house. Main threats to the Parque Estadual Jaraguá include illegal deforestation, forest fires, and disorganized tourism.
