Avenida 23 de Maio, originally known as Avenida Itororó and later Avenida Anhangabaú, is a major thoroughfare in São Paulo, Brazil. It acts as the primary artery connecting the Vila Mariana region to the central areas of the city. This bustling avenue is a critical component of the North-South Corridor, handling a significant volume of daily traffic.The avenue's name commemorates the 23rd of May, 1932, the date when students Martins, Miragaia, Dráusio, and Camargo lost their lives during the Constitutionalist Revolution. This event marked a turning point in São Paulo's fight for autonomy.The concept for Avenida 23 de Maio dates back to 1937, initially conceived as Avenida Itororó. The project was later revised and renamed Avenida Anhangabaú by former Mayor Prestes Maia. However, it wasn't until 1969 that the avenue was officially inaugurated, providing a direct link between the city center and Congonhas Airport. The construction of the avenue was a multi-stage project that faced several delays. In 1958, it was integrated into the Plano das Vias Expressas Diametrais Urbanas (Urban Diametral Expressway Plan) and officially named Avenida 23 de Maio by Ordinary Law number 4,473, on May 22, 1954.Today, Avenida 23 de Maio is a wide, divided highway that stretches for 3,220 meters. It includes dedicated bus lanes to improve public transportation efficiency along the North-South Corridor.
