Originally a farm, the area began to transform in 1878 when its lots were sold to Italian immigrants, who shaped it into the vibrant, Italian-influenced neighborhood it is today. The Morro dos Ingleses earned its name from an English golf club that once occupied the area. The construction of the Escadaria do Bixiga physically linked this upper-class area with the working-class Italian community below.With 84 steps spanning 16 meters in height, the staircase has become an iconic architectural feature of Bixiga. It has served as a backdrop for numerous films, television shows, and advertisements, adding to its cultural significance.
