Vale do Anhangabaú: A Historical Promenade in São Paulo

Vale do Anhangabaú, nestled in São Paulo's city center between the Viaduto do Chá and Santa Ifigênia, serves as a dynamic public space with a storied past. The name Anhangabaú comes from the Tupi language, possibly meaning 'poisonous water,' as the indigenous people considered the river cursed. Originally, the area was a valley with the Anhangabaú River running through it, but the river was canalized in 1906 as the city expanded.In 1910, the area was transformed into Anhangabaú Park, a European-style garden that divided old São Paulo from the new. Over the years, the valley has undergone several transformations, including a period in the 1940s when it was converted into an expressway. In the early 1980s, a public tender led to a revitalization project that created a slab over the avenues, reconnecting the two sides of the valley and creating a large boulevard.Today, Vale do Anhangabaú is a 43,000 square meter space used as a crossing point and a venue for public events. Recent renovations have enhanced pedestrian areas and added landscaping and art installations. It also connects to other central squares like Praça Ramos de Azevedo and Largo São Bento. Visitors can enjoy gardens, artwork, and fountains while glimpsing iconic buildings like the Martinelli and the Municipal Theatre. The space hosts events like Virada Cultural and offers free activities such as concerts and classes.
