The Espinhaço Mountains, or Serra do Espinhaço in Portuguese, represent the largest and most continuous Precambrian orogenic belt in Brazil. Stretching approximately 1,100 km (680 mi) north to south through Minas Gerais and Bahia, this range acts as a natural divider between the São Francisco River basin and the shorter, eastward-flowing rivers draining into the Atlantic Ocean. The mountains boast a rich biodiversity, with landscapes ranging from grasslands to rocky fields. Unique flora, including endemic orchids and bromeliads, thrive here. Birdwatchers can spot the hyacinth macaw and other species. The Espinhaço is also known for its numerous waterfalls, offering refreshing respite and scenic beauty. Culturally, the Espinhaço Mountains are steeped in local folklore and history. The region played a significant role during the Gold Rush of the 18th century. Colonial-era villages dot the landscape, each with its own unique charm and stories. Local communities maintain traditions in agriculture, crafts, and cuisine, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's heritage. The Espinhaço Mountains are recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, highlighting their ecological importance and commitment to sustainable development.
