Discover more about Arpoador

Arpoador, meaning 'harpooner' in Portuguese, is a beloved spot in Rio de Janeiro, located where Ipanema and Copacabana meet. The name comes from its history as a whale hunting location. Today, it's known for the large rock formation, 'Pedra do Arpoador,' that juts out into the Atlantic, providing panoramic views. The beach itself is a relatively small, 500-meter stretch of sand that is considered the birthplace of Brazilian surfing. The waves here are ideal for surfers of all levels, and surf schools are readily available. Even at night, surfing continues under spotlights. However, Arpoador's main draw is its breathtaking sunset. Every evening, crowds gather on the rocks to watch the sun dip behind the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) mountains, often erupting in applause as the last sliver of sun disappears. The tradition was started by journalist Carlos Leonam in the 1960s. Beyond the beach, visitors can explore Garota de Ipanema Park, located just north of Arpoador, featuring playgrounds and viewpoints. Nearby, Praia do Diabo (Devil's Beach) offers a more secluded spot with a traditional outdoor gym. Arpoador embodies the spirit of Rio, blending natural beauty, sports, and a vibrant social scene.
