Discover more about Centro Cultural da Romaria

The Centro Cultural da Romaria, located in Congonhas, Minas Gerais, has a rich history deeply intertwined with the city's religious traditions. Originally constructed in 1932, it served as a welcoming lodge for pilgrims visiting the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, especially during the annual Jubilee festivities. These celebrations, dating back to the 1770s, saw a surge in visitors, leading to the construction of small, conjoined houses to accommodate them. For a small fee, pilgrim families could stay at the Romaria during the Jubilee. However, the site was sold to a business group in the 1960s, leading to the demolition of most of the original structures in 1968, leaving only the entrance gate. In 1993, the city government reclaimed the land, and the following year, restoration began on the gate and reconstruction of the houses, echoing the architectural style of the Sanctuary's chapels. A revitalization project in 2018 further enhanced the space. Today, the Centro Cultural da Romaria is a hub for preserving history and promoting art. Its large circular courtyard is a popular venue for city events, hosting artistic performances and providing recreational space for locals and tourists alike. The center also houses a collection of traditional Brazilian handicrafts, including ceramics, textiles, and wood carvings.
