Public Transport

To reach Christ the Redeemer using public transport, begin by heading to Cosme Velho neighborhood, the location of the Corcovado Train station. From the South Zone (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon), take bus “Circular 1” to the train station entrance. Alternatively, take the subway to Largo do Machado station and then either walk (approximately 40 minutes) or take a taxi/Uber to the train station. From the train station, purchase a round-trip train ticket that includes the entrance fee to the monument. As of July 2025, the train ticket costs R$122.50 for adults. The train ride takes about 20 minutes through the Tijuca National Park, offering scenic views. Alternatively, vans are available from Largo do Machado, Copacabana (Lido Square), and Barra da Tijuca (Citta America Shopping Center). Purchase tickets online or at the departure point. Prices vary depending on the departure location, ranging from R$26 to R$100+. The van includes the entrance fee to the statue.
Taxi/Ride-sharing

For a direct route to Christ the Redeemer, take a taxi or ride-sharing service (Uber) to the Paineiras Visitor Center in Alto da Boa Vista. From the South Zone (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon), a taxi/Uber to Paineiras will cost approximately R$40. From Paineiras, take an official van to the monument. These vans are the only ones allowed to make the final ascent. As of July 2025, the van fare from Paineiras is R$35 , and shuttles run every day from 8 am to 5 pm. This fare includes the round trip and the entrance to visit the monument. Note: It is not possible to drive directly to the entrance of Christ the Redeemer. Private vehicles must stop at Paineiras.

The statue stands 30 meters (98 feet) tall, with arms stretching 28 meters (92 feet) wide, offering a welcoming embrace to all who visit. Perched atop the 700-meter (2,300-foot) Corcovado Mountain within the Tijuca National Park, it provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the coastline, and Guanabara Bay. The concept of a Christian monument on Corcovado Mountain dates back to the 1850s. However, it wasn't until after World War I that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro spearheaded the project to create a statue that would reclaim the country for Christ. The statue was designed by Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by Paul Landowski. Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1931, costing an equivalent of $3.4 million today, entirely funded by the Catholic community in Brazil. Made of reinforced concrete and clad in soapstone, the statue has withstood the test of time and weather. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations and repairs, including a major restoration in 2010. In 2006, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil, was consecrated at its base. Visiting Christ the Redeemer is a must-do for any traveler to Rio de Janeiro.
