Discover more about Parque Lage

Parque Lage, officially Parque Henrique Lage, is a captivating blend of natural beauty and architectural elegance located in Rio de Janeiro's Jardim Botânico. The park's history dates back to colonial Brazil when it was a sugar mill. Over the centuries, it transformed into a grand estate, reaching its peak in the 20th century under the ownership of industrialist Henrique Lage. Lage commissioned a Roman-style mansion as a gift for his wife, Italian opera singer Gabriela Besanzoni, turning the property into a hub for Rio's high society. In 1957, Parque Lage was recognized as a historical and cultural heritage site. In the 1960s, it became a public park, offering walking trails through subtropical forests. Today, the mansion houses the Escola de Artes Visuais (Visual Arts School), hosting exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events. A café operates in the mansion's courtyard, providing a picturesque spot for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery. The park spans 52 hectares and includes diverse landscapes, from French-style geometric gardens to romantic English-style gardens. Visitors can explore artificial caves, small lakes, and the trailhead for hiking up Corcovado Mountain. The park offers stunning views of the Christ the Redeemer statue and the surrounding Tijuca Forest. Parque Lage has also served as a filming location for movies like "The Incredible Hulk" and "City of God".
