Getting there

Driving

From Rio de Janeiro, take BR-116 towards Teresópolis. The drive is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Once in Teresópolis, follow signs to the Serra dos Órgãos National Park. Parking is available near the park entrance, but it can be limited, especially during peak season. Parking fees may apply.

Public Transport

Take a bus from Rio de Janeiro's Novo Rio bus station to Teresópolis. Several bus companies operate this route, with frequent departures throughout the day. The journey takes around 2 to 3 hours. From the Teresópolis bus terminal, you can take a local bus or taxi to the entrance of Serra dos Órgãos National Park. Bus fares from Rio to Teresópolis typically range from R$30 to R$60. Local transport to the park entrance will cost an additional R$5 to R$20.

Hiking

From the park entrance, follow the well-marked trails towards Dedo de Deus. The hike to the base of the mountain takes approximately 2 to 3 hours and involves a steep ascent through the forest. Be prepared for challenging terrain and bring plenty of water and snacks. The park charges an entrance fee of approximately R$30 per person.

Overview

Dedo de Deus (Finger of God) is a majestic rock formation within the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, located in Magé, Rio de Janeiro. Rising to 5,417 feet, its unique shape resembles a finger pointing towards the heavens, making it an iconic landmark and a favorite among climbers and hikers.The peak holds historical significance as its summit was once deemed unreachable by European mountaineers. However, in 1912, a team of Brazilian climbers successfully scaled the mountain, establishing a route that paved the way for future adventurers. The original route, called Teixeira, is still used for rappelling during the descent.The challenging climb to the top involves a steep hike through a forest trail, followed by a *via ferrata* section with steel cables, and some scrambling. The east face route, almost 200 meters long, presents various climbing techniques, including chimneys and dihedrals. The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Serra dos Órgãos National Park. The best time to visit is during the South American winter, from May to September.
