Discover more about Callwood Rum Distillery

Callwood Rum Distillery, nestled in Cane Garden Bay, is a living testament to the British Virgin Islands' rich rum-making heritage. As the sole surviving distillery on Tortola, it offers a unique glimpse into the traditional methods of rum production that have been practiced for centuries. Founded in the late 1800s when a buccaneer named Richard Callwood bought the Arundel Estate for his son, Richard Jr. The estate already had sugar cane fields and a rum distillery. Today, the distillery is run by the fourth generation of Callwood's. The distillery has been producing rum since the 1600s. In the 18th and 19th centuries, there were 106 distilleries in the BVI, 26 of them were on Tortola. Visitors can witness the entire rum-making process, from the crushing of sugarcane to the fermentation and distillation in copper pot stills. The air is thick with the sweet aroma of fermenting sugarcane, and the historic stone buildings exude a sense of timelessness. The distillery offers tours where you can learn about the history of rum production in the BVI and sample the distinctive flavors of Callwood's rums. Callwood Rum Distillery stands as a reminder of the BVI's cultural heritage and the enduring spirit of traditional craftsmanship. A visit here is not just a tasting experience, but a journey back in time to discover the roots of Caribbean rum.
