Trunk Bay, consistently ranked among the world's top beaches, is a crown jewel of St. John, in the US Virgin Islands. Its name originates from the leatherback turtles, known locally as 'trunks,' that inhabit the area. The bay's stunning beauty is characterized by its soft, white sand and clear, turquoise waters, perfect for swimming and relaxation. The area boasts a rich history, with evidence of early settlements dating back to 700 AD by the Taino tribe. In the colonial era, it thrived as a sugar estate. Later, in the mid-20th century, Laurance Rockefeller purchased the land and donated it to the National Park Service, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Trunk Bay is particularly famous for its 650-foot underwater snorkeling trail. This unique trail allows snorkelers of all skill levels to explore the diverse marine life and coral formations. Underwater plaques provide information about the various species and reef structures, enhancing the educational experience. The small islet of Trunk Cay, located just off the beach, offers additional snorkeling opportunities, with the western side known for its vibrant corals and fish.
