Discover more about Luagan Lalak Forest Recreational Park

Luagan Lalak Forest Recreational Park, a 270-hectare protected area in Brunei's Belait District, offers a unique natural experience. The park's name, derived from the Brunei Malay word 'luagan' (a large, non-flowing body of water), reflects its central feature: a freshwater swamp. The term 'lalak' is believed to be a misspelling of 'dalak', a local name for snakehead fish. Established in 1980, with further development in 1993 and 1998, the park officially reopened in 2012 to commemorate World Forestry Day. Unlike many recreational forests, Luagan Lalak remains a natural wetland ecosystem, emphasizing its importance in conservation. During the dry season, the waters recede, revealing a field of Lepironia sedges, while the rainy season transforms the area into a mirror-like lake. Visitors can explore the park via a network of wooden walkways and a 200-meter bridge that spans the lake, offering stunning views and photo opportunities. The park is a haven for birdwatchers, with opportunities to spot various endemic and migratory species, including the Black-and-yellow Broadbill and the Rhinoceros Hornbill. Lucky visitors may also catch a glimpse of elusive mammals like the Sunda pangolin and red leaf monkey. Informative signages along the trails help visitors identify local flora, such as ferns and Brunei's national flower, the simpur. The park is open 24 hours daily, and admission is free, making it an accessible destination for nature lovers. Beyond the park's natural beauty, Luagan Lalak also provides a glimpse into local culture. A visit to nearby Iban longhouses, such as Teraja or Mendaram, offers an immersive cultural experience.
