Discover more about Petroleum Museum, Miri, Sarawak.

Located on Canada Hill (Bukit Tenaga) in Miri, Sarawak, the Petroleum Museum provides an insightful journey into the history of Malaysia's petroleum industry. Miri, now a vibrant city, owes its growth to the discovery of oil in the early 1900s. The museum's location is historically significant, as it sits on the site of the first oil exploration in Miri, marked by the 'Grand Old Lady' drilling rig. This first oil well produced oil from 1910 to 1972. The museum officially opened in May 2005, with funding from Shell Malaysia and Petronas. Inside, exhibits detail the history of the petroleum industry in Malaysia, including its impact on the country. Displays include scaled oil platform models, historical tools, and explanations of oil extraction and production. One popular exhibit is an earthquake simulator. Outside the museum, visitors can see the 'Grand Old Lady,' the first oil well in Malaysia. This historical monument produced oil for 62 years, from 1910 to 1972. Canada Hill also offers scenic views of Miri. The hill itself got its name from a Canadian employee or team of drillers who worked in the Miri oil industry.
