Deer Cave: A Colossal Karst Wonder

Deer Cave, or Gua Rusa in Malay, is a primary attraction within Gunung Mulu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its exceptional caves and karst formations. Once considered the largest cave passage in the world before the discovery of Sơn Đoòng Cave in Vietnam, Deer Cave remains a colossal natural wonder. The cave's name originates from the deer that once sought shelter within its vast chambers, using the cave to lick salt-bearing rocks. The main chamber reaches staggering dimensions of over 2 kilometers in length, with a height and width never less than 90 meters. The sheer scale is awe-inspiring, dwarfing visitors and creating a sense of profound insignificance. A well-maintained 3.8km plankwalk guides visitors from the park headquarters through the lowland rainforest to the cave entrance. This walk itself is an attraction, offering glimpses of the region's biodiversity, including immense trees, limestone outcrops, and the chance to see various wildlife. Along the way, you'll also pass an ancient Penan burial cave, adding a touch of cultural significance to the journey. Inside Deer Cave, a path winds through the massive passage, revealing unique features such as the 'Garden of Eden,' a collapsed section of the cave roof that allows sunlight to penetrate, fostering lush vegetation. Another highlight is the 'Abraham Lincoln's Profile,' a rock formation resembling the former president. Deer Cave is home to millions of bats, with the most recent estimate suggesting well over a million. The bat exodus, a nightly spectacle where the bats emerge from the cave in search of food, is a must-see event. This natural phenomenon typically occurs between 5 and 7 pm, weather permitting, and creates a mesmerizing display as the bats form a black cloud against the sky.
