Istana Darussalam, meaning 'Abode of Peace', holds a special place in Brunei's history as the former residence of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and the birthplace of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Constructed in the 1940s, the palace exemplifies indigenous Malay architecture. Originally built with wood in 1947, concrete was later used to reinforce its structure.Istana Darussalam witnessed several significant events, including the birth of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in 1946. The palace served as a private office for Sultan Omar Ali in 1947. Although the royal family moved to Istana Darul Hana in 1951, Istana Darussalam remained a significant site. Today, Istana Darussalam is under the protection of the Antiquities and Treasure Trove Act.Visitors can appreciate the palace's exterior, characterized by its green and brown facade and traditional Malay design. The palace is surrounded by well-maintained gardens, offering a serene atmosphere for reflection. While internal access is restricted, the Istana Darussalam provides a glimpse into Brunei's regal past and architectural heritage.
