Discover more about Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

Dominating the skyline of Bandar Seri Begawan, the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is a breathtaking testament to Brunei's rich cultural and religious heritage. Completed in 1958, the mosque was commissioned by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei, and is named in his honor. He is also known as the “Architect of Modern Brunei”. The mosque's design is a captivating fusion of Mughal and Italian architectural styles. Its most prominent feature is the magnificent golden dome, made of 3.3 million pieces of gold Venetian mosaics, which glimmers in the sunlight. The interior boasts Italian marble walls and Saudi Arabian carpets. The mosque is divided into six sections: the mihrab, mimbar, prayer hall and dome, minaret, ablution area, and courtyard. All architectural components were cast by Cavalieri R. Nolli, an Italian sculptor and stonework contractor. Set on a five-acre site on the edge of the Sungai Kedayan, the mosque is surrounded by a man-made lagoon, creating a sense of tranquility and peace. In the lagoon sits a replica of a 16th-century Bruneian royal barge called the 'Mahligai', which was used to stage Quran reading competitions. The mosque can accommodate 3,000 worshippers. Visitors can explore the exterior and gardens, but photography is not allowed inside. The mosque is a national landmark and continues to be a central venue for royal weddings and national day prayers.
