Tasek Merimbun: Brunei's Serene Lake

Tasek Merimbun, Brunei's largest natural lake, is a jewel within the 7,800-hectare Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park. Located approximately 70 kilometers from Bandar Seri Begawan in the Tutong District, the lake is renowned for its unique S-shape and dark waters, a result of tannins from falling leaves.Formed around 5.7 million years ago, Tasek Merimbun is more than just a scenic spot. It's a haven for diverse ecosystems, including peat swamp forests, mangroves, and lowland mixed dipterocarp forests. The park is home to a wide array of flora and fauna, including over 200 species of birds, making it an Important Bird Area. Keep an eye out for pitcher plants and the valuable agar wood.The area holds cultural significance as well, with the ethnic Dusun community considering the lake and its surrounding forests sacred. Archaeological finds on Pulau Jeludong point to the area's historical importance. Declared as Brunei's first ASEAN Heritage Park in 1984, Tasek Merimbun is recognized for its biodiversity conservation efforts.Visitors can explore the lake by boat, hike along nature trails, and relax in lakeside gazebos. The park also features a visitor center with information about its history, flora, and fauna. Birdwatchers will find plenty to spot, and researchers can take advantage of chalet facilities.
