The Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque, also known as Masjid Hassanal Bolkiah, stands approximately 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) from Tutong town center, in Brunei's Tutong District. Officially opened in 1966, the mosque is named in honor of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.The mosque has a rich history, with the first mosque on the site built in 1922. This was quickly abandoned, and a second mosque was built in front of the Tutong River, on the site of the current bus and taxi stand. A third mosque replaced it in 1928, but was destroyed during World War II by Allied air strikes. In 1950, a fourth, larger mosque was built to accommodate the growing community.As the community continued to expand, the current Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque was constructed between April 1965 and mid-1966, costing an estimated B$700,000. The land was donated by Abdul Latif bin Khataf and Mohd. Daud bin Bujang. The mosque was officially opened on August 26, 1966, by the then-Crown Prince Hassanal Bolkiah. At the time, it could accommodate up to 700 worshippers, but now it can accommodate up to 1,000. The mosque also includes a library, a multipurpose hall, and a chamber for burial preparations.The mosque's architecture blends traditional Islamic design with modern elements, and its golden dome and elegant spires create a breathtaking sight. Visitors are welcome to experience its serene atmosphere and admire the beautiful calligraphy, intricate mosaics and stunning chandeliers. The surrounding gardens provide a peaceful escape for reflection and photography.
