Discover the serene beauty and architectural splendor of Tutong's iconic Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque, a symbol of Brunei's Islamic heritage.

4.4

The Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque, located approximately 1 kilometer (0.62 mi) from Tutong town, is a prominent symbol of Islamic architecture in Brunei. Named after the current Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, the mosque was inaugurated in 1966 and has a capacity of up to 1,000 worshippers. The mosque is not only a place of worship but also a cultural center that reflects Brunei's devotion to its faith. The mosque's design blends traditional Islamic elements with modern aesthetics, creating a unique architectural attraction. The exterior is dominated by a majestic golden dome and elegant spires that rise above the landscape. Inside, visitors can admire beautiful calligraphy, intricate mosaics, and stunning chandeliers, all of which reflect the rich Islamic culture. The mosque also houses a library, a multipurpose hall, and a chamber for burial preparations. The history of mosques in Tutong is quite interesting. The first mosque was built in 1922, but it was quickly abandoned. A second mosque was then built in front of the Tutong River, on what is now a bus and taxi stand. A third mosque, constructed in 1928, was destroyed during World War II by Allied air strikes. Before the Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque was built, a fourth mosque was built in 1950 to accommodate the growing community. Surrounded by lush green gardens, the Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque offers a tranquil environment for reflection and photography. Visitors are welcome from early morning until night, with guided tours available to provide insights into the mosque's history and architecture.
