Discover more about Asian and African Art Museum

The Asian and African Art Museum in Tryavna is a cultural gem, unique on the Balkan Peninsula, offering visitors an unexpected journey into the art and traditions of Asia and Africa. Housed in the building of the old Tryavna public bath, the museum's collection comprises over 380 exhibits. These items, largely of religious significance, originate from Nepal, Tibet, China, India, and several African countries, dating from the 2nd to the 20th centuries. The museum's collection is largely the donation of Bulgarian sculptor Zlatko Paunov, who resides in the USA. Paunov, a graduate of the Art Academy in Sofia, developed a passion for global art through his travels. The collection features statues of Hindu deities, cult objects related to Buddhism, and striking African masks. Buddhist art forms a significant portion of the exhibits, including invaluable Tibetan and Chinese 'tanks' – canonical scenes painted on fabric used in worship. Bronze and gilded statuettes of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are also highlights. African art is represented through various items and masks, including many used in voodoo magic and pagan rituals, often depicting demons. Visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a lesser-known world, enhanced by carefully selected music. The museum provides a captivating experience for those interested in exploring the diverse cultures of Asia and Africa.
