Discover more about Church of Saint Demetrius of Salonica

Located at the foot of Trapezitsa and Tsarevets hills, on the right bank of the Yantra River, the Church of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki holds a special place in Bulgarian history. It was here, in 1185, that the brothers Asen and Peter proclaimed the rebellion against the Byzantine Empire, a pivotal event that led to the restoration of the Bulgarian state and the establishment of Veliko Tarnovo as its capital. Legend says that the nobles announced that Saint Demetrius would abandon Thessaloniki to aid the Bulgarian rebels. Originally built as part of a monastery, the church has a cruciform dome with a narthex and galleries. Its architecture is characterized by alternating stone and brickwork, adorned with glazed ceramic friezes. The church was destroyed in the 13th century, likely by an earthquake, but was reconstructed in the 1350s. It suffered further damage over the centuries, including plundering in the 18th and 19th centuries, and was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1913. Reconstruction began in 1977 and was completed in 1985, based on architectural remains and the design of other well-preserved Bulgarian churches from the same era. Today, visitors can see two layers of frescoes, dating back to the church's construction and the 14th century. While access may be limited without a guide, the church's exterior and historical significance make it a compelling site to visit.
