Balchik Botanic Garden: A Black Sea Oasis

Nestled on the Black Sea coast in Balchik, Bulgaria, the Balchik Botanic Garden offers visitors a serene escape into a world of diverse flora and tranquil landscapes. Established in 1955 on the grounds of the former summer palace of Romanian Queen Marie, the garden has grown into a sprawling complex boasting over 3,500 plant species.The garden is divided into several distinct sections, each offering a unique experience. The terraced gardens, designed in a geometric style, cascade down towards the sea, interconnected by walkways, stairs, and tunnels built with the local Balchik stone. These terraces host a variety of themed collections, including a rose garden with 34 different types of roses, and seasonal displays of spring and summer flowers.One of the garden's most notable features is its impressive collection of cacti and succulents, the second largest of its kind in Europe after Monaco. The outdoor exposition showcases large-sized cacti, while the greenhouse cultivates over 2,600 species of cacti and other sub-Mediterranean plants.Beyond its botanical diversity, the garden also holds historical and cultural significance. The palace itself, once the summer residence of Queen Marie, reflects a blend of Balkan and Ottoman architectural styles. The complex includes residential villas, a Christian chapel, and other buildings that offer a glimpse into the Queen's life and beliefs. The garden is a protected area and a monument of culture.
