Perched on a hill near the village of Klyuch, 16 kilometers west of Petrich, Samouil's Fortress is a remarkable testament to Bulgaria's rich medieval history. Established in the late 10th century during the reign of Tsar Samuil (997-1014), the fortress was a key strategic military point in the defensive system against the Byzantine Empire. Tsar Samuil likely used it as a command center. In 1014, the fortress was the site of a major battle where the Byzantine Emperor Basil II defeated Samuil's army, capturing 14,000 Bulgarian soldiers. Basil II ordered the prisoners to be blinded, with every 100th man left with one eye to lead the others home. Legend says that the sight of his blinded army led to Samuil's death. Basil II then became known as the Bulgar-slayer.Today, the national park-museum includes the archaeological site, featuring 13 preserved dugouts, a large dugout, and the ruins of a lookout tower. A panoramic site with a memorial and exhibition hall has been constructed over the ruins. Ongoing excavations continue to unearth artifacts that offer insights into the fortress's past.
