Discover more about Television Tower

The Borisova Gradina TV Tower, an enduring symbol of Sofia's broadcasting history, rises 106 meters above Borisova Gradina park. Constructed in 1959, the tower marked a pivotal moment as the launch site for the first Bulgarian National Television broadcasts. Designed by architect Lyuben Podponev, along with engineer A. Voynov and technologist Georgi Kopkanov, the tower's construction began in December 1958 and was completed by December 26, 1959. The tower features 14 floors and three platforms, encompassing an area of 144 square meters per floor. Positioned at 595 meters above sea level, it initially facilitated VHF radio broadcasts in 1962 and later expanded to include Programme 2 and 3. In 1972, it was upgraded to support OIRT color television standards. Since 1985, the Vitosha Mountain TV Tower has taken over as the primary broadcasting center. However, the Borisova Gradina TV Tower continues to transmit signals for private radio stations and DVB-T terrestrial television. Today, the tower serves as a historical landmark within the park, offering a glimpse into Bulgaria's technological past. While visitors cannot access the tower itself, its presence enriches the park's atmosphere, blending history with the natural beauty of Borisova Gradina.
