Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest major city, such as Sofia or Plovdiv. From Sofia, take the A1 motorway towards Blagoevgrad. After about 70 km, take exit 6 for the E79 towards Dupnitsa. Follow the signs for Rila Monastery, which will guide you onto the Rila Monastery road (also known as Road 62). The drive from Sofia to Rila Monastery takes approximately 2 hours. Once you arrive, you will find a parking area where you can leave your vehicle (note: there may be a small parking fee).
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, start by taking a bus from Sofia Central Bus Station to Rila Monastery. Buses leave regularly throughout the day, and the journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. You can purchase tickets at the station. Once you arrive at the Rila Monastery bus stop, it's just a short walk to the entrance of the monastery. Make sure to check the bus schedule in advance for return trips.
Taxi
If you prefer a more direct route, consider taking a taxi from a nearby town. For example, if you're in Dupnitsa, you can hire a taxi to take you to Rila Monastery. The ride takes about 30 minutes and will cost around 30-40 BGN. Make sure to agree on the price before starting your journey.
Hiking
For the adventurous, there are hiking trails leading to Rila Monastery from nearby villages. One popular route is from the village of Dobarsko. This hike can take 4 to 5 hours, so make sure you are well-prepared with adequate supplies and a map. The trails are marked, but it’s advisable to start early in the day.
