Nestled in a picturesque valley in the Rhodope Mountains, the Devil's Bridge (Dyavolski Most) is an ancient Ottoman bridge with a mysterious allure. Constructed between 1515 and 1518 by the Bulgarian builder Dimitar, under the commission of Sultan Selim I, the bridge was a vital link connecting Thrace with the Aegean Sea. Today, it stands as a striking relic of the past, drawing visitors with its stunning architecture and the many legends that surround it.The bridge is located about 10 kilometers northwest of Ardino and 4 kilometers east of the village of Galabovo, in an area characterized by steep slopes and stunning natural beauty. Its three elegant arches reflect in the Arda River, creating a captivating optical illusion, especially when the sun is at the right angle, and some claim to see the devil's face in the reflection. The bridge itself is 56 meters long and 3.5 meters wide, with the central arch reaching a height of almost 12 meters.The Devil's Bridge is steeped in local folklore. Legend has it that the builder, Dimitar, made a pact with the Devil to construct a bridge that could withstand the turbulent waters of the Arda River, which had destroyed previous attempts. In return for revealing the secret to building a sturdy bridge, the Devil demanded that his image be forever integrated into the structure. Another legend tells of a Bulgarian girl who, fleeing Ottoman soldiers, saw the Devil's reflection in the water, causing her pursuers to flee in terror.Declared a monument of culture in 1984, the Devil's Bridge is accessible by car via a rough road. Tourist infrastructure has been developed nearby, offering picnic and recreation areas.
