Monyak Castle, also known as Mneakos, is a medieval fortress perched high in the Rhodope Mountains, approximately 11 km east of Kardzhali and 2 km south of the village of Shiroko Pole. Rising to 586 meters above sea level, this imposing fortress was constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries, playing a vital strategic role in guarding the Zhelezna Vrata (Iron Gates) Pass.From its lofty vantage point, Monyak offered protection to the medieval city and the Monastery of St. John the Baptist, located in present-day Kardzhali. The fortress is one of the largest and highest in the Rhodopes, boasting a protected walled area of 50 hectares. Its strategic importance is underscored by its mention in chronicles of the Third and Fourth Crusades. In 1206, Monyak was besieged by knights of the Fourth Crusade, and it was here that Henry of Flanders was crowned the second and last Latin Emperor.Though largely destroyed, the ruins of Monyak Castle still evoke a sense of its former glory. Visitors can explore the remains of the defensive walls, including a 270-meter stretch on the northern side reaching 7-8 meters in height, an octagonal tower, and ancient water reservoirs. The difficult access, with steep and almost vertical terrain in places, adds to the adventure. Upon reaching the fortress, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the Studen Kladenets Reservoir, the town of Kardzhali, and the surrounding Rhodope Mountains.
