The Thracian cult complex “Orlovi Skali” (Eagle Rocks) is a unique and well-preserved historical site located approximately 3 kilometers outside of Ardino, Bulgaria. The complex features a large rock formation with around 100 trapezoidal niches carved into the steep volcanic cliffs. These niches, each about 70 cm high and 34 cm deep, are situated in hard-to-reach places. Believed to have been created by the Thracians in the 4th-5th century BC, the site is thought to have been used for religious rituals. One prevailing theory suggests that the niches were used to hold burial urns, while another proposes they were used for one-time ritual activities. Fragments of charred clay discovered around the rocks indicate that ritual burning may have taken place here. Visitors to Orlovi Skali can explore the rock formations and enjoy the scenic natural environment. The site is accessible via well-marked trails, suitable for various fitness levels.
