History of Briz

Vineyards, Slopes and Villa Land

Before Briz became a substantial urban district, the north-eastern slopes above Varna were associated mainly with open land, vineyards, gardens and scattered villas. The area’s elevation and exposure distinguished it from the denser low-lying city, while roads gradually linked the hillside properties with the coastal outskirts. Its modern identity grew from this mixture of semi-rural land use and leisure housing rather than from an old market street or medieval settlement. The name Briz, meaning “breeze” in Bulgarian, reflects the district’s relationship with the air currents and open coastal position.

The Monument on Turna Tepe

The district’s most consequential twentieth-century addition was the Monument to the Bulgarian–Soviet Friendship on Turna Tepe. Unveiled in 1978, the monumental concrete composition was created during Bulgaria’s state-socialist period and commemorated the political relationship between Bulgaria and the Soviet Union. Its location on the hill made it visible across a large part of Varna and turned a previously peripheral slope into a powerful urban reference point.
