Discover more about Ouagadougou Cathedral

The Ouagadougou Cathedral, officially named the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ouagadougou. Constructed between 1934 and 1936, it is one of the largest cathedrals in West Africa. Apostolic vicar Joanny Thévenoud from the White Fathers initiated the construction when the region was known as French West Africa. The cathedral's design is reminiscent of a European Romanesque basilica, yet it incorporates local materials. The use of red mud brick gives the structure an African feel, contrasting with the European architectural style. The two towers at the front entrance, though of different heights, add to the cathedral's unique appearance. Inside, the cathedral features a spacious nave and stained glass windows that cast colorful light. An altar dedicated to Mary, Ave Maria, with a stone-carved statue of the Virgin, is located behind the cathedral near the parking area. The surrounding area is lively, with local vendors and a glimpse into the vibrant culture of Ouagadougou.
