    From Bujumbura, take the main road south towards Rutana. The journey is approximately 64 km south of Gitega. Once in Rutana, follow local signs to Chutes de la Karera. Be prepared for a rough road in the final stretch, especially during the rainy season. Parking is available near the falls. There is an entrance fee to access the falls.

    Public Transport

    To reach Chutes de la Karera via public transport, take a local bus from either Bujumbura or Bubanza to Mihama. From Mihama, hire a motorcycle taxi (moto) to take you directly to the falls. The bus fare from Bujumbura to Mihama is approximately 1,000 BIF. The motorcycle taxi ride from Mihama to the falls will cost around 2,000 BIF.

This collective name refers to a series of four waterfalls that have become emblematic of the country's natural beauty. The falls are located approximately 64 km south of Gitega.The main waterfall plunges dramatically over a rugged cliff face, descending around 80 meters into a serene pool below. The Karera Waterfalls consist of six branches divided into three landings, sprawling across 142 hectares. The tiered structure creates natural pools and basins at various levels, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the refreshing waters.The falls are at their most spectacular during the wet season, typically from October to January or February to May, when the water flow is at its peak. The surrounding dense gallery forests add to the area's biodiversity, featuring towering trees and diverse bird species. Hiking trails of varying difficulty crisscross the area, offering panoramic views of the falls and the surrounding landscape.Chutes de la Karera holds cultural significance for local communities, who view the falls as a sacred and spiritual place.
