Discover more about Monte Santo António

Monte Santo António, rising 379 meters (1,243 ft) above the southwestern part of Boa Vista, is the island's second-highest point. Like Rocha Estância and Monte Estância, it ascends steeply from the surrounding plains, creating a dramatic landmark. This natural monument, encompassing 459 hectares (1,130 acres), is a protected area, preserving its geological and geomorphic characteristics. The mountain's upper reaches are composed of rocky basalt. The views from the summit extend across much of Boa Vista and, on clear days, to the islands of Maio and São Nicolau. Hiking trails wind through the area, offering opportunities to see the region's unique plant life. Local legend tells of Nha Tomás, who lived as a solitary figure atop Rótxa de Santantone, cultivating the land and raising livestock. Today, the area provides a tranquil retreat, inviting contemplation amidst Cape Verde's striking landscapes.
