Discover more about Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island, situated 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco, boasts a multifaceted history. Originally named 'La Isla de los Alcatraces' (The Island of the Pelicans) in 1775 by Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala, the island's strategic location led to its development as a military reservation in the mid-19th century. Fort Alcatraz was completed in 1858 and housed Confederate prisoners of war during the Civil War. In 1934, Alcatraz transitioned into a federal penitentiary, designed to house the most troublesome inmates from other prisons. Its reputation as inescapable was cemented by the cold waters and strong currents of the San Francisco Bay. Notable inmates included Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the 'Birdman of Alcatraz'), and George 'Machine Gun' Kelly. Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary operated until 1963. In 1972, Alcatraz became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and opened to the public in 1973. Today, visitors can explore the cellhouse with a self-guided audio tour, learn about the island's history through exhibits, and appreciate the natural beauty of the island, which also serves as a bird sanctuary.
