Getting There

  • Driving

    From Point Reyes Station, head south on Highway 1, then turn right onto Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Take the next left onto Bear Valley Road and follow it to the visitor center. From San Francisco, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and head north on Highway 101. Take Sir Francis Drake Boulevard west. Parking is free, but can be limited during peak season. As of May 2025, six EV charging stations are available. To reduce congestion, use the gravel lot near the trailhead for longer visits.

  • Public Transport

    From San Francisco, take a Golden Gate Transit bus (Route 101) to the San Rafael Transit Center. Transfer to Marin Transit Route 68, which will take you to Point Reyes Station. From there, it's approximately 2 miles to the visitor center. Consider using the West Marin Connector shuttle for curb-to-curb service between Point Reyes Station and the visitor center, reservations are required. A single ride on Marin Transit is around $2.

Nestled in the heart of the Olema Valley, the Bear Valley Visitor Center is the ideal starting point for any visit to Point Reyes National Seashore. The center provides an orientation to the park's roads, trails, and natural and cultural history. The visitor center's exhibits offer a glimpse into the diverse ecosystems of Point Reyes, including displays on whales, tide pools, sandy shores, and seabirds. Visitors can learn about the Coast Miwok people who inhabited the area for thousands of years, as well as the region's ranching history and the powerful earthquakes that have shaped the landscape. A seismograph inside the center tracks current earthquake activity. Rangers are available to answer questions, provide maps and trail recommendations, and issue backcountry camping permits. The center also features a bookstore with field guides and other useful resources. Outside the visitor center, a short paved loop trail called the Earthquake Trail explores the San Andreas Fault zone. A replica of a Coast Miwok village, Kule Loklo, is located nearby, offering a glimpse into the lives of the area's original inhabitants. The Bear Valley area also boasts over 150 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs.
