Discover more about Bison Paddock

Nestled in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, the Bison Paddock provides a unique glimpse into the American West. Since 1891, bison have roamed this enclosure, offering visitors an unexpected encounter with wildlife in the heart of the city. Initially, the bison were introduced to the park as part of a breeding program to save the species from near extinction due to overhunting and habitat loss in the late 1800s. Superintendent John McLaren spearheaded this conservation effort, and the first bison, a bull named Ben Harrison, arrived from a Kansas ranch. The herd thrived, with over 500 calves born in the park over the years, playing a vital role in the species' recovery. Today, the paddock is home to a herd of female bison cared for by the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens staff. Visitors can observe these impressive animals grazing and interacting within their spacious enclosure. The surrounding area features informative plaques detailing the history and significance of bison in American culture. The Bison Paddock is more than just an exhibit; it's a living museum that showcases the importance of wildlife conservation and the role urban parks can play in preserving natural heritage.
