Live Oak Park, a cherished green space in North Berkeley, has been a community hub since its opening in 1916. The park's origins trace back to 1914 when the City of Berkeley purchased four acres from landowners R.S. Penniman and Michael O'Toole. The park site was bought on installments for $87,000. Penniman's former residence served as the park's clubhouse and even housed the North Branch Public Library from 1916 to 1936. The park boasts a variety of attractions, including playgrounds suitable for different age groups, well-maintained tennis and basketball courts, and ample picnic areas shaded by mature trees. Codornices Creek meanders through the park, adding to its natural charm. The park also features a recreation center that hosts classes and events for all ages. Live Oak Park has a rich history. In its early days, the Live Oak Athletic Club played football, basketball, and baseball there from 1921 to 1928. Tennis great Helen Wills Moody, who lived nearby, practiced on the park's tennis courts. The park has undergone several improvements over the years, with community volunteers playing a vital role in maintaining its beauty. The Himalayan Fair, an annual celebration of Himalayan culture, is held in Live Oak Park.
