Discover more about Strawberry Creek Park

Strawberry Creek Park, located in the Poet's Corner neighborhood of Southwest Berkeley, is a vibrant community space with a unique history. The park's 3.7 acres were once part of the Santa Fe Railroad freight yard. In a pioneering move, the park incorporated a 'daylighting' project in 1977, uncovering a buried section of Strawberry Creek and allowing it to flow naturally through the park. This restoration, completed in 1984, has become an international model for urban stream rehabilitation. The park offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, as well as a school-age play area and picnic space. The restored creek is bordered by native California plants, providing a habitat for local wildlife and a tranquil setting for visitors. A cafe within the park offers coffee, snacks, and meals, making it a perfect destination for a relaxing day. Strawberry Creek itself is a significant feature, having been a primary reason the University of California, Berkeley, chose its location in the 1860s. The creek once served as the University's water supply, but later faced degradation and culverting. The Strawberry Creek Restoration Program, launched in 1987, continues to work towards preserving and enhancing the creek's ecosystem. Today, Strawberry Creek Park stands as a testament to community collaboration and environmental stewardship, offering a welcoming space for recreation, relaxation, and connection with nature.
