Hiking
From the Big Sur River Inn, head south on CA-1 for approximately 1 mile until you reach the Big Sur Valley. Here, you can find a trailhead for the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Enter the park and follow the signs to the Pfeiffer Falls Trail. This easy-to-moderate 1-mile trail will lead you through a beautiful redwood forest. After reaching the falls, continue on the same trail as it ascends towards the ridgeline. Follow the trail markers until you see the signs for Shepherd's Knoll. The views from the knoll are breathtaking, offering a scenic vista of the coastline.
Biking
Start from the Big Sur community center and head north on CA-1. Look for a bike path that runs parallel to the highway. Continue biking for about 2 miles until you reach the junction with Palo Colorado Road. Turn left onto Palo Colorado Road, and follow it for about 1 mile. Keep an eye out for trail signs that will lead you to Shepherd's Knoll. The ride offers stunning views of the coastline and access to various scenic stops along the way.
Walking
If you are staying at the Big Sur Lodge, exit the lodge and walk towards the main road, CA-1. Head south on CA-1 for roughly 0.5 miles. On your left, you will see the entrance to the Big Sur River. There are paths along the river, which you can follow to enjoy the serene environment. Continue to walk along the river until you reach the trail that leads up to Shepherd's Knoll. This route is peaceful and allows you to connect with nature while making your way to the scenic lookout.
