Discover more about Arts District

The Arts District, nestled on the eastern edge of Downtown Los Angeles, has undergone a remarkable transformation from a 19th-century industrial zone to a modern-day artistic and cultural haven. Its roots trace back to the late 1800s when the area was filled with vineyards. As railroads moved in, it evolved into an industrial hub with factories producing clothing, furniture, and auto parts. However, by the mid-20th century, industrial needs shifted, leading to the decline of the district and leaving many warehouses empty. In the 1970s, artists, drawn by the affordable rents and large open spaces, began to move into these vacant buildings, converting them into studios and live-work spaces. This underground arts scene gained official recognition in 1981 with the city's Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program, which allowed artists to legally reside in these converted industrial buildings. Today, the Arts District is a vibrant neighborhood brimming with art galleries, studios, and museums. Street art and colorful murals adorn building facades, making it a paradise for art enthusiasts and photographers. Visitors can explore a variety of artistic mediums, from contemporary paintings and sculptures to avant-garde installations. The area is also home to trendy shops, cafes, restaurants, rooftop bars and cool boutiques. Notable attractions include Hauser & Wirth, a contemporary art gallery housed in a restored 1890s flour mill complex, and the Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (ICA LA), another cutting-edge art gallery committed to making contemporary art accessible. The Arts District also boasts a thriving culinary scene, with restaurants like Bestia, known for its rustic Italian dishes, and Manuela, offering farm-to-table Southern-inspired cuisine.
