Getting There

Walking
If you are starting from the Joshua Tree Visitor Center located at 6554 Park Blvd, Joshua Tree, CA 92252, head east on Park Blvd towards the intersection with Highway 62. Upon reaching the intersection, cross safely to continue straight onto the Joshua Tree Parkway. Walk along the Parkway for about 2.5 miles, enjoying the desert scenery. Once you reach the intersection with the entrance to the park, continue straight for another half mile until you see the Barker Dam parking area on your left. The hike to the dam itself is approximately a 1-mile loop trail from the parking area.

Bicycle
Starting at the Joshua Tree Visitor Center, you can rent a bicycle from a local shop. Begin by cycling east on Park Blvd towards Highway 62. Cross the highway at the intersection and continue onto Joshua Tree Parkway. The ride is roughly 2.5 miles, and you will enjoy a smooth ride with minimal traffic. After crossing into the park area, keep going for another 0.5 miles until you arrive at the Barker Dam parking area. From there, you can lock your bike and take the short hike to the dam.

Public Transportation
Although public transportation options are limited in Joshua Tree, you can use the Morongo Basin Transit Authority (MBTA) bus service. You will need to take the bus from the Joshua Tree area to the closest drop-off point near the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. From there, you’ll need to walk about 1 mile along the Joshua Tree Parkway to reach the Barker Dam parking area. Be sure to check the MBTA schedule for bus times as they may not be frequent.
