Point Bonita Lighthouse
Point Bonita Lighthouse: A Beacon at the Golden Gate
Explore Point Bonita Lighthouse in the Marin Headlands: a historic beacon offering stunning views of the Golden Gate, maritime history, and a unique coastal experience.
Perched dramatically at the entrance to the San Francisco Bay in the Marin Headlands, Point Bonita Lighthouse has guided ships through treacherous waters for over 150 years. This active lighthouse, maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard, offers visitors a unique blend of history, stunning views, and a touch of adventure. Reached by a half-mile trail that includes a hand-carved tunnel and a suspension bridge (currently closed for maintenance), the lighthouse provides breathtaking panoramas of the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the rugged Marin coastline. Explore the exhibits, learn about the lives of lighthouse keepers, and soak in the natural beauty of this iconic landmark. Be sure to dress in layers, as the coastal weather can change quickly, and arrive before closing time to ensure access through the tunnel.

Driving
From Highway 101, take the Alexander Avenue exit. Follow Alexander Avenue back under the freeway and turn left onto Bunker Road. Continue on Bunker Road, passing through the Baker-Barry Tunnel. Turn left onto Field Road and follow it to the Point Bonita parking lot and trailhead. Parking is limited, especially on weekends; consider parking at Battery Alexander, a quarter-mile down the road. Allow ample time for parking and the half-mile walk to the lighthouse.
Public Transport
Take Golden Gate Transit lines 101, 132, or 150 to the Spencer Avenue Bus Pad in Sausalito. From there, walk under the freeway and follow the Morning Sun Trail up the hill. Continue into the Marin Headlands, following signs towards Point Bonita Lighthouse. This involves a significant uphill walk (approximately 2.5 miles) and is best suited for those comfortable with hiking. Check Golden Gate Transit schedules for up-to-date information. Note: The 76X Marin Headlands Express, which previously stopped closer to Point Bonita, is currently not in service.
Walking
For those already in the Marin Headlands, follow Bunker Road to Field Road, then proceed to the Point Bonita parking lot. From the parking lot, it's a half-mile walk to the lighthouse. Be prepared for a steep descent and ascent on the trail. Note that the suspension bridge is currently closed for maintenance, limiting access to the viewing platform only.
